Glossary

From A for AGF Videoforschung to Z for zapping, the most important technical terms in video research are explained here.

ICC is an acronym that stands for Internal Coincidental Check. It refers to a method for proving reliability, i.e. the correct log-in and log-out of panel participants. To this end, the usage of all household members in a sub-sample of the AGF Panel, which comprises about 1,500 households, is surveyed by way of telephone interviews at different, exactly defined times, the results of which are then compared with the measurement results of these panel households. The ICC is conducted concurrently with the ICC during the survey period.

Identity analysis is conducted in pairs of programmes, commercial breaks and intervals of time to determine the extent to which the viewers of these programmes or intervals of time are identical. In addition to individual analyses, this method also makes it possible to extrapolate several pairs over time and generate averages of their results.

In-page video ads refer to a form of online video advertising in which videos containing advertising messages are integrated into web pages such as log-out pages, for example. Although in-page video ads start automatically when the web page is visited, the audio must be actively turned on by the user, unlike the case of In-stream video ads.

In-stream video ads refer to a form of online video advertising in which advertising messages are embedded in videos and run automatically. In most cases they cannot be skipped by users. In-stream video ads are further sub-divided into Linear video ads and Non-linear video ads.

Infomercials are continuous advertising programmes in which advertising is presented in the form of editorially prepared content. Unlike conventional advertising, more emphasis is placed on the conveyance of information in infomercials.

Injection is a method for filling in missing data, usually due to survey questions not being answered. For example, an injection is carried out to fill in missing information about panel members after the completion of the annual Structural Survey in the AGF Panel. A mathematical algorithm is used to find the most similar-possible persons/households whose characteristics can then be transferred to the persons/households whose characteristics are lacking.

In the AGF system, installation refers to the connection of the reception devices of a panel household to the measurement system. This makes it possible to retrieve the usage data of households and transmit it to the central system on a daily basis.

Interactive video ads are online ad spots that allow users to interact with them. For example, sweepstake questions can pop up during a spot and when users click on them they are sent to the sweepstake. Once the sweepstake questions are answered, the ad spot continues from the place where it previously stopped. Interactive video ads belong to the category of Linear video ads and therefore never run concurrently with video content.

Intermedia refers to a comparison between different media genres. Intermedia comparisons can be  challenging because the different media genres are subject to different usage patterns and the usage of different media can usually be measured by different methods.

TV reception via the Internet, including IPTV, OTT and hybrid offerings.

Intramedia refers to a comparison within a media genre. Unlike intermedia comparisons, intramedia comparisons are unproblematic because they are not based on different usage patterns.

IP sniffing is a method based on an intermediate system (e.g. IP box or server) that is connected to the TV set to read the signal. The technology is switched into the network connection between the receiver and the internet connection in order to observe the data traffic and thus log the internet pages or addresses that are accessed.

IPTV is an abbreviation for Internet Protocol Television and describes the digital transmission of television programmes and films via the closed broadband network of an IPTV provider. This guarantees the availability of the content.

In contrast to the traditional transmission paths, a tuner is no longer required for the reception of IPTV-based programmes, since IPTV, technically speaking, involves the streaming of video files. For the conversion of these files for display on a conventional television set, a special receiver (set-top box) or a stick must be interposed by the IPTV provider.

IR codes are codes that are assigned to each button of an infrared remote control device. The codes differ by manufacturer and device type.

An IR sampler is an infrared measurement device that reads the data sent by a remote control device, such as TV set on/off, channel change, TTX and EPG. It complements audio matching and can help enhance the precision and level of detail of the overall measurement of television usage.
